The Desert Greenhouse--Turning Waste Desert Land into Productive Farm Land

The desert greenhouse is great innovation to turn the waste sandy land into arable land to plant vegetables, fruits, increase the area of arable and output of agricultural products with high quality.

After scientific inspection and verification, many desert areas possess good natural conditions, which can be developed and utilized to build greenhouses. The so-called good natural conditions are mainly embodied in four aspects. Firstly, there is abundant sandy land resource; secondly, there is usually no pollution in air, sandy soil and underground water; thirdly, the light and thermal resources are extremely favorable, the temperature of sandy lands rise more quickly under the sunshine and can meet very well the required light and heat conditions for crops to grow in solar greenhouses; fourthly, these are fewer diseases and pests for crops in greenhouses in the desert due to the extremely low moisture level.

In addition, due to the low rainfall in desert, wheat straw, twigs and other organic materials are good building materials in desert areas, sand is even inexhaustible source of building materials and cultivation substrate. Using these cheap materials to construct greenhouses for facilities planting can not only save both construction investment and operating cost, but also achieve organic cultivation. Therefore, it has very good social, economic and ecological benefits to construct greenhouses for vegetable production in the desert.

There are few organic substances required for the growth of the crop in sandy land, grooves with certain size and depth can be dug to hold tree bark, sawdust, poultry manure, oil cake, etc mixed evenly with sandy soil, which will fully ferment, forming vegetative, in which well bred seedlings can be planted.

The desert greenhouse is already in use in China. In our built greenhouses for trial tests, eggplants, peppers, watermelons, tomatoes and other crops flourish. All kinds of experimental data show that the quality and yield of these plants are far better and higher than that in regular ground greenhouses, it is not a problem. That the annual amount of real harvest from each desert greenhouse is at least 20,000 Chinese Yuan (or about 3200US$).

My proposed desert green house has a great potential to be adopted in every country with desert land all over the world in the future. I will be glad to provide technical guide and instruction on the application of the desert green house to all interested parties.  The potential target groups include those countries with a need of developing desert land as an arable land resource.

The cost of each desert sunlight greenhouses is 45000 Yuan (or 7150 US$), which include building materials and construction worker salary.
